Young women are often found in the most marginalized segments of the informal economy with fewer assets, greater risks and lower income. The most disadvantaged girls – have even less access to decent work. To help girls build confidence, pursue education and interests and acquire the skills and training they need to secure decent work or start a business. Through the sustainable livelihoods program, DoK has established a social enterprise that ensures they can: access learning opportunities, gain transferable skills and transition from school to work. This project focuses on Electrical Tailoring that does not require high educational requirements to achieve Dressmaking, Bags, Re usable pads and Fashion Design.

They are also, relatively affordable to enroll the young
women and girls compared to other professional pursuits.
The project also integrates the self-help concept where vulnerable girls and young mothers are formally registered into Self-Help Groups where they jointly save and support each other and are linked to the available youth focused devolved funds. The young women also sell the products they produce and make a livelihood out of it. Currently the sustainable livelihood program has reached over 300 vulnerable girls and young mothers in the informal settlements of Nairobi who have been organized into 12 Self Help groups of which 5are active. Several of the groups have been formalized and are eligible for financial support from government devolved funds and microfinance institution.
