ADVANCING AND EMPOWERNING WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE ON CLIMATE JUSTICE AND SUSTAINABILITY IN UASIN GISHU AND NANDI COUNTIES
Supported by Urgent Action Fund Africa (UAF – Africa) we have so far managed to mobilize and train women in climate resilient agriculture within Uasin Gishu and Nandi Counties of Kenya who are also Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) for their communities. We trained them on resilience agriculture and how to evolve their agriculture from home use produce to Agri business and make a sustaining livelihood despite the impact of climate change on their lands. This has positioned women better in these specific counties because once they are financially empowered it’s a step forward towards attaining gender equality. We also trained women on how to voice their issues to their leaders and we are positive that now they are actively involved in issues arising in their community.
The mobilization and voice training have contributed to WHRDs ability to speak up and advocate for Climate Justice and Gender Equality, leading to more inclusive and equitable decision-making at National, County and Community policy levels. We see this with the recent engagement of rural based WHRDs with their county governments. They are aware of the roles their leaders, both the county and national government play in case of disaster and how to mitigate. Through our partnership with the county government, they are now aware and have shown interest in working on engendering their policies and programs to promote women empowerment and agricultural resilience. This is one of the areas we are looking forward to in future intervention. The relationship has opened an opportunity to engage the county government who have previously been resistant to such engagement.
